Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD5000AAKX

Works Well, (What's this?) Can't complain. Does what it should do. I haven't had any issues with the HHD thus far. Great for everyday computing.
Great Deal, (What's this?) THis is just what they say--"barebones". No installation instructions But it was VERY easy-just plug and play-unhooked the old cables and old drive and reattached/installed new drive.
Drive is average. Tech support & software are bad., (What's this?) I bought two WD10EALX drives for a new i7 build. The drives are not very quiet when accessed. They make a rattling noise (the drives are securely mounted).
So far, so good, (What's this?) Bought this drive to replace original iMac 20" (late 2006) internal hard drive (250GB). Install was a bit of a challenge but the drive worked out of the gate. The first time the wife used the iMac after the swap she thought something was wrong with it. This drive is quite a bit noisier than the original, which you really couldn't hear at all. It doesn't bother me because I actually like the audible feedback that the drive is working so I know what the computer is doing. And it is not THAT loud. Part of the problem is that the iMac is right there in front of your face, not down on the ground like a PC desktop would be.
WD digatal caviar blue 500 GB hard drive from Amazon, (What's this?) Order arrived in time allotted, loaded new OS and has been in service for three weeks. Unit is very quite and no problems since installation.
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive - WD5000AAKX, (What's this?) Got this drive to replace a smaller drive, I installed this drive only to find out the drive was dead. Amazon had a no return on this drive. I contacted WD and they replaced the drive, but it cost me $13.00 to send the dead drive to them. I installed the replacement and glory and behold the drive is unreadable or writeable. I spent the next several days corresponding with WD on their try this see if that works.
Works fine, but louder than some drives, (What's this?) This drive does what it's supposed to, and is MUCH faster than a 5,000 RPM drive. I use it in my MacBook Pro 15" (2007/2008 Pre-Unibody).

My only complaint is that it is louder than some drives, making the classic sounds when performing hard work, and also seems to heat up a bit more easily.

I've had it for a few months, and it hasn't acted up yet.
If your drive is not recognized..., I purchased several of these drives to use as spares for servers that had the previous generation SATA II 3.0 Gb/sec WD3200AAKS drive. Well as luck would have it, I've had some failures of those old ones and went to replace them, only this drive was not recognized by the computer. After a day of digging, turns out there is a buggy Intel SATA II controller out there in many makes and models of computers that does not properly interact with this particular drive, causing the drive to remain at the 6.0 Gb/sec interface speed and the controller at 3.0 Gb/sec; i.e. no communication possible.

The fix is to place a jumper across pins 5 and 6 which will force the drive to SATA II speeds and make it show up. Unfortunately it doesn't come with any jumpers, so hopefully you have an old computer lying around you can steal one out of.
Working Just fine, (What's this?) Had a problem with my #2 HD in that the computer wouldn't recognize it. When booting up the computer, it wanted to stop and ask for a bootable CD. Even though it was the boot drive. Replaced it with the Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB drive and everything is working as it should. Good buy, good price.
Great Hard Drive, (What's this?) Again WD has another great hard drive. I've never had a bad drive from this company and I will continue to keep my business with them for many years to come.
